ARCHITECTURE IS A LONG GAME. THE BUILDINGS WE DESIGN TODAY WILL SHAPE HOW PEOPLE GATHER, CONNECT, AND BELONG FOR DECADES TO COME. THAT RESPONSIBILITY IS NOT SOMETHING WE CARRY LIGHTLY. AT SHANKS ARCHIECTS, COMMUNITY IMPACT IS NOT A METRIC WE TRACK AFTER A PROJECT IS COMPLETE. IT IS THE STANDARD WE DESIGN TO FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.

WHAT WE MEASURE

We ask the right questions before a line is drawn: Who will gather here? How will this space shape daily life? What will people carry with them when they leave? These are not soft questions. They are the most practical questions we know, because a building that fails the people it was built for has failed at its most fundamental task.

Our projects span worship centers and funeral homes, learning environments and civic plazas, commercial developments and neighborhood anchors. In every category, our definition of success is the same: a space that genuinely serves its community—not just on day one, but for every year that follows.

FAITH & WORSHIP COMMUNITIES

David Shank brings 40 years of experience working with churches, and our lead specifying architect and lead project managing architect each bring 30 to 40 years of their own. Together, this depth of experience shapes worship environments that serve both congregation and neighborhood—spaces open enough to become genuine community anchors, not just gathering places for members.

LEARNING ENVIRONMENTS

From classrooms designed for neurodivergent learners to post-secondary campus facilities, the spaces we design for learning are built on the conviction that environment shapes potential. When students feel their school was built with them in mind, something shifts. Curiosity deepens. Belonging grows. That is the standard every Learning Studio project is held to.

Our City Studio work is rooted in the belief that good cities are built one intentional space at a time.

The JST Design Studio has served the funeral and memorial industry for over five decades, designing spaces where families find genuine comfort during their most difficult moments. Dignity, warmth, and operational care are built into every facility—because families deserve spaces that honor the people they love, and communities deserve memorial spaces worthy of their significance.

One congregation told us that their renovated campus—designed to open toward the street rather than turn away from it—had become the site of a weekly neighborhood meal program that now serves over two hundred people. They did not plan for that when they hired us. But the space made it possible, and the community made it happen. That is the kind of outcome we design toward.
