High walls, limited windows, and expansive parking lots send an unintentional but powerful message—outsiders aren’t welcome here. We design against that instinct. We strive to design places that are warm and welcoming.
David Shanks has spent more than three decades working alongside congregations to understand the spiritual weight and practical complexity of church facilities. A worship space carries dual responsibilities: supporting a congregation’s spiritual life and serving as a genuine community anchor for the surrounding neighborhood. When designed well, these goals reinforce each other.
Every church project begins with a community assessment, bringing together ministry leaders,
facility committees, and often members of the surrounding neighborhood to map out current
usage and future needs. Design follows the community. We don’t arrive with a preferred
aesthetic or a standard solution. We arrive with questions.
